We study mechanisms of pathogenesis of infections and cancers and discover novel compounds that inhibit infection and oncogenesis, and overcome drug resistance. To do this, we use a combination of enzymology, structural biology and biophysical chemistry.

  • Congratulations to Caixia Hou on her new manuscript published in Biochemistry describing crystal structures of human tumor suppresive transcription factor ERF in collaboration with the Dmitri Ivanov research group at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
  • Our manuscript on reductase MtmW from the mithramycin biosynthetic pathway in collaboration with the Rohr lab was highlighted by the Advanced Photon Source this month.

  • Congratulations to Ankita Punetha on her manuscript describing crystal structure-based optimization of inhibitors of a tuberculosis drug-resistance factor Eis, published in ACS Chemical Biology in collaboration with Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova, Tanya Parish and Jamie Posey research groups.

November 2019

  • Congratulations to first co-authors Caixia Hou, Ryan Wheeler (Rohr lab) and Xia Yu (Rohr lab) on the publication of their collaborative Angewandte Chemie manuscript on the crystal structure of the last mithramycin biosynthetic enzyme MtmW and the discovery that the product of MtmW is actually not mithramycin, but its stereoisomer.

  • Congratulations to Caixia Hou on the publication of her fantastic manuscript on crystal structures of mithramycin and its analogue and on how mithramycin is inactivated by boron in MedChemComm.
